Just like a new car, a used car finance offer includes additional fees and payments, covering both state taxes and our registration and other costs at Scott Lot. While you can’t avoid paying sales tax, you may be able to negotiate other fees.

Car Taxes

We tend to forget about sales tax when making most day-to-day purchases, but for a car, it can add up to a significant amount. In most of Pennsylvania, you will be charged the standard six percent sales tax, although Allegheny County and Philadelphia charge slightly more. Any rebates or dealer incentives are subtracted from the price before sales tax is applied.

Additional Fees

As with any car purchase, you’ll also need to factor the additional fees paid to the DMV into the cost. You will need to pay a title fee, a plate transfer fee, and a registration fee. If you are buying your used car from a dealership like ours, you will also have to pay documentation fees, which vary depending on the dealership.

Negotiating Fees

While any state taxes or fees are non-negotiable, fees imposed by the dealership may be. Documentation fees, reconditioning fees, and other dealer-added fees cover the cost of advertising and selling a used car, but your dealer may be willing to reduce or eliminate them. Like some other states, Pennsylvania also has a limit on how much can be charged for documentation fees.
